Turkish court releases 5 in escape trial of former Nissan CEO

A Turkish court released on July 3 five people accused of helping escape former Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn from Japan to Lebanon through an airport in Istanbul.

The court adjourned the trial to another date after hearing the suspects’ arguments.

Seven people were arrested in Istanbul on January 2 for allegedly helping to escape Ghosn.

Police squadrons arrested the suspects; four pilots, two employees for a private land services company, and one company executive.

The arrest came after the Istanbul Attorney General’s Office launched an investigation into Ghosn’s flight to the Lebanese capital of Beirut through Istanbul’s Atatürk airport, after he skipped bail in Japan.

As part of the investigation, two flights of two private planes from the Japanese city of Osaka to Atatürk Airport and then to Beirut were investigated.

One of the jets, which took off from Osaka, landed at Atatürk airport at 5.15 am local time (0215GMT) on December 29, while the other Bombardier Challenger 300 jet took off from Atatürk airport for Beirut at 6 am local (0300GMT) on December 30.

In November 2019, Ghosn was arrested in Japan on corruption charges during his tenure as Nissan president. Lebanese authorities announced last week that they had arrived in the country “legally”.
