THE LIFE OF THE GREAT EMPIRE SELJUK MELIKŞAH
Melikşah was born on Sunday August 16, 1055. The period when Melikşah was enthroned at the age of 18 was the most brilliant period of the Great Seljuk State. During his reign, the Great Seljuk State reached its widest borders.
First, he captured Transoxiana and Harzem by suppressing his uncle’s rebellion. The famous vizier Nizamülmülk played an important role in both Melikşah’s ascension and his victories. Three-quarters of Anatolia was obtained during the reign of Melikşah and great successes were achieved in Syria.
Jerusalem was taken from the Fatimids in 1076, Antakya in 1085, and Urfa from the Byzantines two years later. Aleppo and Damascus were also under Seljuk rule during his time. The state’s borders had expanded from the Kashgar and Seyhun canal to the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, and the Sea of Oman. The Abbasid caliphs of Baghdad were also completely under the command of the Seljuk Empire. Reigning for twenty years, I. Melikşah was known for his intelligence, as well as his love of science and his literary level. Together with his vizier Nizamülmülk, who was a descendant of Turks like him, he was able to buy many nations and build many works such as bridges to rivers, castles and waterways to cities.
The great Iranian poet Omar Khayyam was one of the great intellectuals of that time, who was protected in his palace.
Melikşah established an observatory in Baghdad and made a calendar revolution that started in 1086 and was based on the principle of the rotation of the earth around the sun, which is called the “Jalal Calendar”.
Although Turkish was spoken in his palace, the literary language was Persian. It has a very nice rubai. Celaleddin Melikşah had three sons named Berkiyaruk, Sencer and Mehmet, all three ruled.
