Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director General, said that a vaccine against the new type of coronavirus (Kovid-19) could be ready by the end of the year.

Ghebreyesus spoke at the “special session on the fight against Kovid-19” of the WHO Executive Board, which ended today in Geneva, Switzerland.

“We will need vaccines (for Covid-19) and we hope we can have one by the end of this year.” Ghebreyesus said he was hopeful about this.

Ghebreyesus did not elaborate on when a global vaccination campaign will begin.

Calling for “global solidarity” as in every speech, Ghebreyesus asked world leaders for political determination to ensure the equitable distribution of Kovid-19 vaccines in countries.

It aims to distribute 2 billion doses of vaccine by the end of 2021 through the Kovid-19 Global Access to Vaccines Program (COVAX), which is carried out in coordination with the WHO.
