FORMAT OF THE UEFA INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE
The UEFA Nations League is a tournament organized to meet the friendly match needs of the national teams. The format of the tournament, whose first champion was Portugal in 2018, has changed in the 2020-2021 season. UEFA Nations League Tournament First, 55 teams were divided into four leagues according to the 2017 UEFA national team rankings for the first tournament, 12 teams in League A, 12 teams in League B, 15 teams in League C and 16 teams in League D. Each league is divided into 4 groups consisting of three or four teams.
The group winners of the main league, A League, met in the final stage to become the UEFA Nations League champion in June. The final stage consisted of two semi-final matches, the match for third place and the final match, to be determined by lottery, with the single-match elimination system. The host country was determined from 4 semi-finalist teams.
The drop and climb system was also implemented in leagues. All group winners from the lower leagues moved up to the top league, while the last group winners (except League D) fell to a lower league. Due to the difference in the number of teams in the groups, the third worst group in League C also fell in League D.
