Five faculty members from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of Samsun Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ) started a research study in inland waters 3 years ago. Supported by TÜBİTAK, Assoc. Dr. Gökmen Zafer Pekmezci and his Assoc researcher. Dr. Banu Yardimci and Assoc. Dr. Cenk Soner Bölükbaş and Prof. Dr. Savaş Yılmaz and Prof. Dr. Nazmi Polat did. As a result of researches conducted by the professors in 26 streams, lakes and ponds of the city, 4 new species of parasites were discovered that are in the common carp family. The parasite species were named ‘Myxobolus Samsunensis’, ‘Myxobolus Karaeri’, ‘Myxobolus Cakmaki’ and ‘Myxobolus Ekingeni’. The scientific article on the discovery was published in the journal ‘Diseases of Aquatic Organism’ on December 21 and made known to the world of science.

Dr. Nazmi Polat said that the 4 new species they found have been named and transferred to the world literature and said: “The number of living species living in the world is increasing day by day with new discoveries. We have declared to the scientific world the existence of 4 new creatures that live as parasites among carp fish, which are common in the inland waters of Samsun, and which no one has encountered, known or named before. “We live the peak that a scientist can enjoy with our friends. Discovering living beings and discovering new species are not so ordinary tasks. It is the product of a lot of time, work and interdisciplinary work.”
‘THE NAMES OF SAMSUN AND 3 SCIENCE PEOPLE ARE GIVEN’
OMU Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Fisheries Department, Assoc. Dr. Gökmen Zafer Pekmezci said that they discovered 4 new species of parasites for the first time in the world and said: “This new species of parasite that we discovered was published in a very important scientific journal. It was shared with the scientific world. We wanted to honor the name. of Samsun where we live and gave it the name of our city. We designated the other 3 species as ‘Myxobolus Samsunensis’ and we wanted to show an example of fidelity by giving the names of the teachers of the members of our faculty in our team: the teacher retired Prof. Dr. Zafer Karaer, faculty member Prof. Dr. Ayşe Çakmak and retired academic staff member Prof. Dr. Gürken Ekingen gave the names of the other 3 species’ Myxobolus Karaeri ‘,’ Myxobolus Cakmaki ‘and’ Myxobolus Ekingeni ‘to honor the names of our teachers We are very happy to make such a discovery.
