The Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the European Union ended. In a press conference after the meeting, Josep Borrell, High Representative for Foreign Relations and Security Policies of the EU, reported on the issues discussed. Borrell used the following statements;
* I am glad that the Council was held physically. That makes things easier for us. As always, we had a very busy schedule. I want to start with good news.
* Today, we accept the EU sanctions regime against human rights violations. One year after the relevant decision was made, the proposal was accepted. This is the first time. This decision will provide national and international contributions to the EU.
* This has been a very clear message on human rights. This decision was very significant before the human rights day that took place three days later.
* These sanctions will prevent those responsible for human rights violations from entering EU territory and benefiting from EU funds.
“AN IMPORTANT CHAPTER HAS NOT GONE”
Borrell also said the following about the parliamentary elections in Venezuela;
* Our second topic was Venezuela. We have a statement on the elections held yesterday. We had previously made suggestions that these elections go well, but the elections were not based on free and democratic principles and do not reflect the opinion of the Venezuelan people.
* The elections in Venezuela did not comply with international principles and an important part of the Venezuelan people did not go to the polls. In this case, we must affirm that Venezuela needs support to get out of this stagnant situation.
* Humanitarian aid must be provided to the Venezuelan people. They need this. As the EU, we are ready to support whatever is done in this regard.
