Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy made statements about Olympos’s new plan. Minister Ersoy answered Hakan Çelik’s questions on CNN Türk screens.

Minister Ersoy, who said the protection area was expanded in Olympos, said the demolitions will begin in buildings other than the plan. In affirming that the perception has been created on social networks and some platforms, Minister Ersoy pointed out that the municipality and local people support the plan.

Minister Ersoy’s comments are as follows:

The subject of Olympus is a subject that has been clarified before my ministry. I asked for the file, examined it in detail. Since the 1990s, unauthorized and unplanned wooden bungalow construction has started around the Olympos stream. It attracts a very attractive interest in national and foreign tourism. These constructions are increasing. As uncontrolled construction has increased, the archaeological site is being investigated in 2017 at the request of the local municipality of the relationship and the Ruins of Olympus Excavation Directorate. As a result, the existing arrangements of the archaeological site are being reorganized. This agreement was announced in February 2017. The issue of 3.5 years ago. Looking at the map on the right, there are two areas. Red is the first degree archaeological protection area, blue is the second degree archaeological protection area. When you look at the total area, 614 hectares, that is, the total area of the blues and reds is 614 hectares. After this arrangement, the red area in front is normally 200 hectares, that is, in the first arrangement, there are 200 hectares of red area and 414 hectares of blue area. After this agreement, the protected area of 200 hectares in the second first degree actually expands, reaching 250 hectares. Currently, the first degree archaeological site increases from 200 hectares to 250 hectares. So the area is expanding. It is made at the request of excavation of our Ruin Excavation Directorate. The main boundaries of the protected area are being expanded. You must protect the first and second degree archaeological sites in the same way that you cannot do any construction. In essence, this is it. And the environment of the first degree archaeological site increases from 200 hectares to 250 hectares. Look, there is a false perception. That’s right, they see the plan when they examine it. In addition, the Olympos stream becomes a third degree archaeological site on a 24-hectare site. This is done consciously on social media and some platforms. A theme that we always find. An attempt was made to create a perception as if the entire area of 614 hectares of land had decreased at archaeological sites. In fact, this program was also a good opportunity. I had the opportunity to explain it in detail. Whereas, the protected area on the coast at the point indicated precisely in the photos has increased from 200 hectares to 250 hectares. There are only 24 hectares in the part, which includes the creek bed in the back, which has been unsubstantiated for 30 years since 1990. In this area, it makes an arrangement in an area of 24 hectares and becomes an archaeological site third grade. The rest is still protected as an archaeological site. Only 4 percent of 614 hectares is a third degree archaeological site; the rest, 96 percent is protected exactly as the area that needs to be protected. Why was this plan necessary? You have to make a protection plan. Within the conservation plan, the areas outside the plan and the buildings in the green area or the road route will already be demolished. Actually, we are opening the way to destruction. We pave the way for the demolition of inappropriate buildings. Others will be formalized within the plan. The municipality has the opportunity to bring infrastructure there regularly. The plan allows it, the wood will be a baseless structure and will have two floors. Municipalities and the local population made statements to support the plan. I gave an instruction on Friday. Send the archeology research team there. Drill additional holes. This work was carried out by drilling at 36 points. In addition to the 36 notes, drill additional holes. Everyone is safe, peace of mind.
