In the operation carried out by the Customs Control teams of the Ministry of Commerce in Hatay, 5,000 tons of transgenic rice were seized that does not comply with the Turkish Food Codex.
An assessment notice from the Hatay Smuggling Customs Control Intelligence Directorate teams based on the quantity of genetically modified rice to be loaded into Turkey, motion passed. The information and documents confirming the notification were obtained through the work carried out. In the analysis carried out through information systems, the shipment to be made by 5 ships from Russia to the port of Iskenderun was evaluated as risky.
Ships tracked via satellite through the ship tracking system were physically tracked after they entered the port area. After the cargo on the ships was transferred to a warehouse in Hatay and a customs declaration was opened for the cargo, the teams took action.
A total of 5 thousand tons of rice were sampled in the warehouse and sent to the Ankara Food Laboratories of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. In the laboratory report, it was stated that the results of the GMO analysis of the examined product did not comply with the Turkish Food Codex.
While 5 thousand tons of genetically modified rice with a market value of 15 million lire were seized, the General Prosecutor’s Office of Iskenderun initiated an investigation for the crimes of opposition to the Anti-Smuggling Law No. 5607, the Criminal Code of Turkey No. 5237 and Biosafety Law No. 5977.
