In a statement from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), it was stated that the grasshoppers in the country caused the loss of 356 thousand tons of grain as a result of damaging the land of approximately 200 thousand hectares.
It has been observed that 1 million people are at risk of starvation due to the grasshopper infestation and urgent food aid is needed.
Ethiopian FAO Representative Fatouma Seid said in a statement on the subject that during this period, when the grasshopper invasion coincides with the new type of coronavirus outbreak (Kovid-19), every effort should be made to protect people’s livelihoods.
Seid said FAO will continue to support farmers and rural residents if conditions allow.
Herds of grasshoppers, which have damaged fields in East Africa and countries in the Middle East for months, can cover 150 kilometers every day.
The 40 to 80 million grasshoppers in a square kilometer can consume enough food for 35,000 people in just one day.
