The Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) decided that subscribers with an electricity bill of 75.11 lira or more can become eligible consumers.
According to the decisions of the EMRA published in the official newspaper, the limit of free electricity consumption was lowered to 1200 kWh by 2021. The theoretical market opening rate corresponding to this limit value was calculated as 97.2 percent in the demand side.
According to the newly determined limit, the consumer whose consumption in the previous year or in the current year is 1200 kilowatt-hours or more, will be eligible. In other words, subscribers with a monthly electricity bill of 75.11 lira or more in 2021 will be free consumers. With the reduction of the eligible consumption limit, which was determined from 1,400 kWh last year, to 1,200 kWh, approximately 2.7 million subscribers will become free consumers. Therefore, the number of consumers in Turkey with an annual consumption of more than 1200 kWh will increase to 23.5 million. In Turkey, there are about 45 million electricity subscribers.
The eligible consumer can buy electricity at a cheaper price by choosing the electricity supplier through a bilateral agreement.
Subscribers, who become free consumers, should be careful about the following issues while taking the opportunity to choose a supplier and buy electricity with a bilateral agreement. Subscribers who are eligible consumers can purchase electricity through bilateral agreements by choosing their own supplier. Under electricity market legislation, generation license holders and supply license holders can sell electricity to eligible consumers. The eligible consumer can buy electricity at a cheaper price by choosing the electricity supplier through a bilateral agreement. Bilateral agreements are commercial agreements concluded between natural and legal persons and the parties can freely determine the terms of the agreement.
Agreement with supply companies or authorized production companies
It is important that subscribers who want to use their free consumer rights pay attention to whether the company that wants to sell them electricity is licensed. Consumers can access the list of licensed supply companies and licensed production companies on the EMRA website. Bilateral agreements can be established and terminated remotely or in writing. Before the bilateral agreement is established, providers must inform consumers with the Consumer Rights Information Form and Preliminary Information Form of the bilateral agreement and ensure the confirmation of the notification.
