In the Aegean Sea yesterday at 2:51 p.m., 17 buildings were destroyed by the 6.9-magnitude earthquake, the epicenter of which was in the Seferihisar district of Izmir. Search and rescue activities continue in 9 destroyed buildings, and the hopeful waiting of the families of those under the rubble continues.
In the earthquake, the Yılmaz Erbek apartment in İzmir’s Bayraklı district collapsed. Search and rescue efforts that began yesterday in the rubble continue uninterrupted.
The teams focused on the search and rescue efforts that were carried out in the rubble on the ground floor of the Yılmaz Erbek apartment, after the dog K-9 ‘Bob’ smelled from one point.
The wrecked equipment found a cat with a collar under the cement. The cat was pulled out of the rubble by crews after 29 hours. The anxious cat was seen to be trembling. The teams named the cat ‘Hope’.
“WE FOUND THE CAT WHILE LOOKING FOR HUMANS”
Pulling the cat out of the rubble, the AKUT officer said: “Every life is important to us. While looking for humans, we found the cat. We are in a building at risk because of the danger of demolition, but we could not leave the cat there and go out. We pulled the cat out of the rubble. “Our K-9 dog’s name is ‘Bob’ and he’s a search dog.”
“HE WAS CUT OFF BY MY CAT, NOT MY HOUSE DESTROYED”
The owner of the cat, who was taken from the wreckage, said: “We have been waiting for news of our cat for 2 days. Finding our cat is destined to our day. I was not sorry that my house was destroyed, I was sorry that my cat was in the rubble. My son will be very happy with this news. The friends of the team called him ‘Umut’ and I want it to continue like that, “he said. (DHA)
