There has been no official statement from the US Navy on the matter, but a defense official, speaking to US television CNN, said the ship Nimitz was returning to the Middle East with its warships.
The official, who did not want to be disclosed, said that the number of US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan will drop to 2,500 as of January 15, and that the ship will support US troops in the region.

It should be noted that the official said that the order to return to the ship was given before the assassination of Muhsin Fahrizade, a critical figure in the Iranian nuclear program.
Fahrizade, one of the key figures in the Iranian nuclear program, was killed yesterday in the attack on his vehicle in the Absederd district of Tehran province.
In his presentation on Iran’s nuclear program in April 2018, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu specifically mentioned Fahrizade, who is known as the architect of Iran’s nuclear program.
