The Azerbaijani army had recaptured Nagorno-Karabakh, which had been under occupation for 28 years, after 44 days of fighting. After Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan accepted defeat, the fighting ended with the joint declaration signed between Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia under the mediation of Russia.
Although the historic victory of Azerbaijan had great repercussions in the international arena, a scandalous decision was signed in the Dutch parliament. The Dutch parliament approved the motion prepared by the Christian Democratic Party (CDA) and the Christian Union (ChristenUnie) to impose sanctions against Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Vice President Mihriban Aliyeva for committing a war crime.
THE RECOMMENDATION TO BE PRESENTED TO THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
By majority vote, the EU accepted that Azerbaijan had committed war crimes in Nagorno-Karabakh and should therefore be punished. Dutch Foreign Minister Stef Blok declared that he did not approve the motion because “there was no correct order.”
Minister Blok stated that an investigation into possible human rights violations in Nagorno-Karabakh should be carried out, only then could sanctions or legal action be imposed on the suspects.
The motion, approved by majority vote, will be presented to the European Parliament in Brussels by Dutch Foreign Minister Stef Blok. (İHA)
