Although the Corona virus continues to die around the world, studies of vaccines and drugs do not fall on the agenda of the international press. BioNTech, which developed a joint vaccine with Pfizer, has announced that its work is 90 percent effective and interest in the company is continuing.
One of the founders of BioNTech, Prof. Dr. This time, Uğur Şahin spoke to The Guardian, one of Britain’s leading newspapers.
‘IT MUST NOT BE POLITICAL’
Responding to claims by Donald Trump, who lost the US election, that the gospel about the vaccine was deliberately delayed, Şahin said: “We want to develop the vaccine as quickly as possible. We have our own coordination system. Every day was very important and we desperately waited for the day the test results would arrive. It didn’t come out early enough. Medical research should never be politicized. Hiding information is unethical. “The important thing for us is to develop the vaccine and we do not do politics.”
‘NO MORE SELF-DEFENDABLE’
Şahin said he was confident that the Covid-19 vaccine they developed would “crush the head of the virus” and end the epidemic that took over the world. Şahin expressed optimism that the vaccine is also effective in asymptomatic infections, saying: “If the question is whether we can stop the pandemic with this vaccine, then my answer is yes, because it will have a great effect if it provides protection even against symptomatic infections. Now we know that the vaccine will defeat this virus, ”he said.
Stating that he believes the vaccine will also prevent transmission of the virus and attack it in more ways than one, Ahin said: “It prevents Covid-19 from entering our cells. But even if the virus has somehow entered, it attacks the cells in the head of the virus and kills it. We have trained the immune system very well to perform these two defensive actions. Now we know that the virus cannot defend itself against these mechanisms, ”he said.
WILL PROVIDE PROTECTION FOR 1 YEAR
Stating that the answer to the question of whether the vaccine will provide different levels of protection to different age groups will be clear within three weeks, Şahin says that it is not yet clear whether it will have a different effect on different ethnic groups.
Şahin notes that the vaccine will be given in two doses to the arm three weeks apart, thus providing protection for at least one year.
93rd RICH FROM GERMANY
The biotech company BioNTech in Mainz, Germany, attracted the attention of the international public during the corona virus outbreak. Turkish Professor Uğur Şahin, a founding partner of the company, reached an agreement with Pfizer and accelerated the vaccine studies. Şahin had been awarded the title of 93rd rich man in Germany in recent months. Şahin and his wife Özlem Türeci, who sold the company they founded for € 400 million four years ago, increased their fortune from € 650 million in 2019 to € 2.4 billion after starting to develop the corona vaccine.
