The statement made by the Russian Foreign Ministry notes that Moscow has made a policy change in the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty START.
According to the news in Euronews, the agreement would expire next February and both parties had previously rejected each other’s proposals for the agreement.
In the statement, it was stated that the United States must accept the same conditions and not propose new conditions. Washington announced that it welcomes this statement.
THE AGREEMENT WAS FIRST SIGNED IN 2010
The new START agreement was signed in 2010 between US President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and limited both countries to possessing a maximum of 550 nuclear warheads and 700 intercontinental missiles. Under the agreement, the two countries were able to monitor each other and verify whether the conditions were met.
Last year, Moscow and Washington announced their withdrawal from the 1987 Mid-Range Nuclear Powers Treaty. Thus, only the New START agreement remained. Russia was not against extending this agreement at first, but the Trump administration stipulated that China should be included in the agreement.
