As many countries in Europe tightened precautions due to the mutated Covid-19 strain discovered in the UK, debate began over whether vaccines would be effective against the new type of virus.
In a press statement, German Health Minister Jens Spahn stated that the new mutated Covid-19 strain, which was discovered in England and began to spread very rapidly, had no effect on the vaccine.
Stating that the virus mutation is of great concern to him, Spahn said: “If the assumption is correct, this mutated virus is significantly more contagious, up to 70 percent, then of course it spreads much faster.”
Emphasizing that it is basically normal for viruses to mutate, Spahn said: “According to today’s information, this mutation has no effect on the vaccination process after consulting the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) and European authorities.” Saying this is very good news, Spahn said: “This means that the vaccine against the mutated species also works.” (İHA)
