Diop, 42, who had been battling cancer for a long time and died on November 29 in Lens, France, was expelled on his last trip to the town of Rufisque where he was born.
Thousands of people flocked to the funeral ceremony, along with Diop’s family and relatives, national soccer players from the time he was running with were also present.

Sall also announced that the national soccer museum, which will be located in the stadium to be built in Diamniadio for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, will be named after Diop.

Diop, who also played for Lens, Fulham West Ham United, AEK and Birmingham City, played 128 times in the Premier League. Diop, in the 2002 World Cup quarter-final match, was eliminated in Turkey wearing a Senegal team shirt.
