The presidential election was held in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) with measures against the corona virus. The voting process, which began at 8:00 a.m., ended at 6:00 p.m.
In addition to the presidential elections, a referendum was held for the constitutional amendment that plans to increase the number of judges in the superior courts.
The counting of votes began with the completion of the voting process. In the TRNC, the news, predictions and comments on the elections and their results on the radio, television and all kinds of broadcasting organs will be free from 7:00 p.m., when the transmission ban will end.
The YSK is expected to announce the uncertain results of the elections and the popular vote at 10:00 p.m.
In the YSK statement, it was indicated that at 5:00 p.m., the participation rate in the elections throughout the country was 54.72 percent.
On the other hand, it was seen that voters used masks and gloves as part of the new type of corona virus (Covid-19) measures.
Officials also warned voters to use disinfectants.
FIRST UNOFFICIAL RESULTS
According to the preliminary data announced, the president of the National Unity Party (UBP) and Prime Minister Ersin Tatar are leading the race.
According to data shared by Bayrak Radio Televisión in the TRNC, 12.71 percent of the polls were opened in the census that began after the voting process ended at 6:00 p.m.
As a result, UBP leader Tatar takes the lead in the elections by getting 33.75 percent of the votes counted.
President Mustafa Akıncı received 27.82 percent of the votes, Tufan Erhürman, the head of the main opposition party, the Turkish Republican Party, with 21.75 percent, and the independent candidate for Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister , Kudret Özersay, with 5.65 percent.
VOTED PRESIDENT CANDIDATES
TRNC Prime Minister and Presidential candidate of the National Unity Party (UBP), Ersin Tatar, voted for the presidential elections.
Prime Minister Tatar used the game in urn number 140 at Şehit Tuncer Elementary School.
Making a statement later, Tatar said that they cast their vows with his wife Sibel Tatar.
Saying “I hope it is beneficial to the TRNC”, Tatar affirmed that there is a good democracy in the TRNC.
Tatar wanted the Turkish Cypriots to give a good test of their understanding of democracy in front of the entire world and that there would be a good turnout in the elections despite the new type of corona virus (Covid-19) epidemic.
Tatar wanted the election to be beneficial and said: “I hope that for the future of the TRNC, the right will come out of the polls to meet the expectations of our people and we will protect the TRNC completely.”
President and independent candidate Mustafa Akıncı played the game with his wife Meral Akıncı at ballot box number 223 at Şehit Ertuğrul primary school in Nicosia at 11 a.m.
Claiming that they run a difficult campaign in epidemic conditions, Akıncı said that they are unable to hold solidarity dinners or meetings in closed rooms, and that they try to hold meetings in small groups.
Claiming that they were not even able to distribute flyers in this process, Akıncı noted that they conveyed their messages to the public through social media and television shows with the work of the campaign team.
Akıncı thanked those who participated in the polls under Covid-19 conditions and the people who would participate and wished the results were beneficial.
Tufan Erhürman, chairman of the Turkish Republican Party and presidential candidate, also voted with his wife Nilden Bektaş Erhürman at the Gönyeli Primary School in Nicosia, according to the Turkish Cyprus Agency (TAK) report.
In his subsequent statement, Erhürman stated that a very difficult electoral period was left behind, the electoral process was not easy under epidemic conditions, and he wanted the president to be elected today to benefit the country.
Kudret Özersay, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and independent presidential candidate, cast the vote at ballot box number 75 at the Beylerbeyi kindergarten in Girne.
Özersay, who came with his wife Aliye Omanel, made a brief statement to the press after wearing the suit with a mask and gloves under the rules of the Covid-19 outbreak.
Özersay invited all the people to go to the polls to protect the future of the country.
The chairman of the Renaissance Party and presidential candidate Erhan Arıklı used the ballot in the 185th ballot box at 9 Eylül Primary School in Nicosia.
Arıklı, who came to vote with his wife, children and grandchildren, made statements after voting.
Arıklı said that an interesting election campaign was taking place in the shadow of the pandemic, and recalled that some rights required by the constitution could not be used and that around 3,500 voters who are currently in quarantine cannot assign votes.
Arıklı said: “We will see together what the second round will look like. It was an extremely democratic and level election. Apart from social media, the candidates had a very level discussion. A situation that should be very pleasant and exemplary in terms of the country’s democracy. . We say good luck. We will do an evaluation, “he said.
Nicosia Democratic Party deputy and independent presidential candidate Serdar Denktaş also used the vote with his wife Müge Denktaş and their grandchildren in ballot box number 68 established in Gönyeli municipality.
Denktaş asked people to go to the polls and claim their will, saying, “Today, there must be a high level of participation so that we can show our will. Everyone must go to the polls and claim our will.”
11 CANDIDATES COMPETE
11 candidates, 7 of them independent, competed in the presidential election in the TRNC.
In addition to President Mustafa Akıncı, President of the National Unity Party (UBP) and Prime Minister Ersin Tatar, President of the Turkish Republican Party (CTP) Tufan Erhürman, President of the Renaissance Party (YDP) Erhan Arıklı and Prime Minister Vice Minister and Chancellor Kudret Özersay and Nicosia Democratic Party (DP) MP Serdar Denktaş competed.
On the other hand, Alpan Uz, Mustafa Ulaş, Ahmet Boran and Arif Salih Kırdağ participated in the race independently and Fuat Çiner as the candidate of the Nationalist Party for Democracy.
Today’s election has gone down in history as the presidential election in which the largest number of candidates participated in the TRNC.
The Turkish Cypriot people went to the polls to elect their president for the tenth time since 1974.
