As a result of extensive studies conducted across the UK, it was announced that the new coronavirus vaccine Novavax was 89.3% effective against Covid-19.
BBC Health Editor Fergus Walsh said the Novavax vaccine was the first vaccine to be shown to be effective against the new strain of the virus emerging in the UK.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that UK health authorities will examine the vaccine, which he called “good news.”
Britain ordered 60 million doses of the vaccine. The vaccine will be produced in the city of Stockton-on-Tees.
The government announced that the vaccines will be delivered in the second half of this year if they get approval from the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority (MHRA).
Novavax said in its statement that the vaccine was found to be 89.3% effective against Covid-19 in phase 3 clinical trials in the UK. It was indicated that 15 thousand people between 18 and 84 years old participated in the studies, and 27% of these people were over 65 years old.
After the vaccine developed by the University of Oxford, Novavax is the second vaccine with extensive experiments in England.
The studies were conducted in conjunction with the UK government’s Vaccine Task Force. Committee Chairman Clive Dix said the results were “spectacular.”
British Health Minister Matt Hancock stated that if the vaccine is approved, the British National Health System is ready for the vaccine.
