According to the report by Meltem Özgenç de Hürriyet:
Osman Çilenti, 44, who has been working as a mosque imam for two years in the Burçalık village of Şanlıurfa Siverek, was assigned by the Siverek Mufti Office to wash the bodies of those who lost their lives to the coronavirus. On social media, it was alleged that Çilenti received this duty as punishment because he opposed some practices in the mufti, and they did not even give him equipment to protect him from the epidemic. Imam Çilenti was said to have felt ill during the funeral washing and died a few days later.
On these accusations, the Directorate of Religious Affairs took action. An official from the Presidency said: “We are investigating the complaints on social media. An investigation into the incident has been launched. Based on the outcome of the investigation, the necessary actions will be taken against the negligent.”
MINISTRY GUIDE
The Ministry of Health has published a guide on how to carry out the procedures of the morgue and burial with respect to COVID-19.
Here are the caveats in the guide:
“Gasilhane employees should wear gloves, medical (surgical) masks, face shield glasses and liquid-proof gowns during funeral washing. The use of pressurized water should be avoided while washing the body because it is a process that can cause splashes of infected funeral fluids and disease transmission “.
