The hearing held at the 34th Superior Criminal Court of Istanbul was suspended so that the case could be decided after the defendants and their lawyers had their defense on the merits.

In announcing its verdict after the break, the court board decided to acquit the defendants Barış Terkoğlu and Eren Ekinci of all crimes. The delegation recalled that Barış Terkoğlu, who was acquitted, could claim compensation for having been detained for a time and also ordered the abolition of the judicial review provision against him.

The other defendants are Aydın Keser, editor-in-chief of Yeni Yaşam newspaper, and Ferhat Çelik, editor-in-chief of the newspaper, and Murat Ağırel, writer of Yeniçağ newspaper, who were sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison for “revealing information and documents related to intelligence activities “. He increased the sentence to 5 years, 7 months and 15 days for having committed the crime against more than one person in a chain with a single act. The court board accepted the defendants’ behavior as a reason for the discretionary reduction in their favor and reduced the sentence to 4 years, 8 months and 7 days each.

The delegation sentenced the accused Odatv editor-in-chief Barış Pehlivan and the journalist Hülya Kılınç to 4 years and 6 months in prison for the same crime, accepting the defendants’ behavior during the judicial process as grounds for a reduction in their favor and reducing the sentence to 3 years and 9 months.

The judicial board ruled that all the defendants were separately acquitted of the crime of “divulging information about the security and political benefits of the state” and decided to release the defendants Barış Pehlivan, Murat Ağırel and Hülya Kılınç, having take into account the period of their detention and the punishment they received.

Deciding to impose a travel ban on these defendants, the delegation decided to separate the file of the fugitive defendant Erk Acarer, editor of the Diario Birgün, whose defense could not be taken.

After the decision, CHP Group Vice President Özgür Özel made a press release saying: “Journalism is on trial. People can be detained for a long time because of the crime of journalism, and then we have become happy with the humanitarian reasons for the situation in which we were supposed to cry when we were sentenced and released with the sentence. ” said.
