According to information cited by the Reuters news agency at the last minute, the National Security Service announced that the attempted assassination of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and the attempt by a group of former officials to seize power was blocked.
Former head of the National Security Service, Artur Vanetsyan, former head of the Republican Party parliamentary group Vahram Baghdasaryan, and war volunteer Ashot Minasyan were reportedly arrested.
“The suspects planned to usurp power illegally by killing the prime minister and were discussing possible candidates to replace him,” the National Security Service said.
After Armenia’s defeat against Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh, an agreement was signed between three countries under the mediation of Russia. After signing the Nagorno-Karabakh agreement, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan was described as a “traitor” in his country. After the agreement, 17 political parties took to the streets and demanded the resignation of Pashinyan, whom they held responsible for the agreement.
Vanetsyan, Tsarukyan and Sağatlıyan held a press conference on November 10, giving Pashinyan until midnight and declared that the protests would continue if he did not resign. The opposition announced that if Pashinyan did not resign, they would try to form an interim government.
