The Attorney General’s Office indicated the following in its statement:

When it became known that a fire broke out at the Vaniköy Mosque in the Kandilli neighborhood of the Üsküdar district of Istanbul on 11/15/2020, which would cause serious damage, our General Prosecutor’s Office immediately launched an investigation.

An investigation was carried out on 11/16/2020 by the prosecutor assigned in the scope of this investigation together with a committee of experts made up of an electrical engineer, a fire chief, a mechanical and heating systems engineer and an expert in fire insurance. In addition, statements were taken from people who witnessed the incident, camera recordings were provided in the region, and law enforcement teams were instructed to collect evidence to determine the cause of the fire.

In the report prepared by the Anatolian Fire Department after the fire was extinguished, it was stated that “the fire started with the ignition of the cable insulation as a result of electrical heating in the multiple electrical cables in the mosque and spread to the entire building extending up to the ceiling with wood flooring materials. ” The report on the detailed expert examination conducted under the supervision of our Attorney General has not yet been completed. In the field of investigation, all the necessary investigations are carried out thoroughly in order to reveal the material truth in all aspects and identify those responsible for the fire, if any, and entrust them to the legal requirements.
