The Azerbaijani territories under occupation were known to be rich in gold mines. Especially in the Kelbajar and Zangilan regions, there were certain deposits during the Soviet period. It turned out that some of these warehouses were operated by some companies during the occupation period. As a result of the determinations made by the Azerbaijan Prosecutor General’s Office, it was decided to initiate an investigation against another firm while the investigations continued.
MOVED TO ARMENIA
The gold mine in the Zengilan region is located northeast of the district. The mining area is very close to Armenia. The facility, which was established for the works on the mine site and the processing of the extracted minerals, can be seen very easily even on interactive maps. According to information obtained from Azerbaijani sources, a facility was established on the Armenian side of the border between the two countries for the transportation of the extracted minerals after the opening of the mining site in the region close to the border with Armenia. The presence of a lounging pool in the facility on the Armenian side is also noteworthy. There is also an airport next to the facility. The gold mine is considered to have separated into the region established as the “Kapan Industrial Zone”.
The Azerbaijan Prosecutor General’s Office launched an investigation against the Swiss-registered Vallex Group after its investigations. An investigation is underway alleging that the company illegally entered Azerbaijani territory and made 301 million manat in unfair profits. The other illegally operated gold mine is in Kelbajar, which is located on the border with Armenia in the north of the occupied territories. Azerbaijani Vice President Hikmet Hacıyev stated in his statement that the gold mine in Vejnali village, which was cleared from occupation, was also being operated illegally. Hacıyev claimed that there is much evidence in the region that Frank Muller, founded by Vartan Sermakes, was illegally prospecting for gold. While confirming claims that one of the reasons for continued occupation in the region for many years was gold mines, events also revealed the looting of precious metals.
