İBB President Ekrem İmamoğlu spoke for the first time about criticism of the Turkish Quran and the reading of the call to prayer at İBB’s Şeb-i Arus event, which has been a topic of discussion for a while. Following the 18-month evaluation presentation at the Haliç Congress Center, Imamoglu was asked about criticism on this issue, the statement of the chairman of Religious Affairs “inadmissible” and if he would fire someone on this issue.
İmamoğlu said: “I also learned the topic when discussions were on the agenda. You all know it; a mayor does not sit down to write, draw or prepare programs. Such a thing has not happened in the past, today or in any other municipality. At this point I am a mayor who has to treat with respect all kinds of criticism about a detail that I do not know, “he said.
“LET’S LOOK THAT IT MAY BE INCOMPLETE”
Explaining that they started a detailed investigation on this issue, İmamoğlu said: “There may be mistakes, there may be shortcomings; We search and investigate. Let me express this clearly: I believe that the Holy Quran should be read in Arabic at the Seb-i Arus ceremony. In saying this, let’s not forget that our language is important to us. “I would like to stress that it is also a big mistake to define our Turkish trying to make our Turks enemies while explaining and ignoring our language.”
“THE TURKISH EZAN IS NOT READ”
Imamoglu had the following to say about the criticism:
“From yesterday to today, speakers and columnists described a process of adhan and said, ‘In this ceremony, the adhan was read like this, it was read like this.’ First of all, there is no adhan in Seb-i Arus. There is also the abuse of adhan in Turkish here; very painful. The positions of the people who do this on today’s agenda are also important.
There are also people who must be very careful when saying a prayer. They even make such expressions that; Like ‘Seb-i Arus, naats and couplets must be read in Arabic’ and so on. First of all, naats and couplets are in Persian in Seb-i Arus. I am a mayor who has studied the process in detail since this issue first entered the agenda. It’s a shame for anyone to reveal this style and approach. It dishonors both the spirituality of Mevlana and the process of Seb-i Arus. Let’s express it again; There is no adhan in Seb-i Arus. It is not possible to read the adhan in Turkish. “
“IT’S NOT A SIMPLE MATTER”
Stating that they were investigating the process, İmamoğlu said: “There were people who pulled us out of some sections like ‘firing’ with a printed recipe etc. There may be errors. There are people among us who do their job in good faith. They are educated and competent people. We look at what is missing, we look at the gap. We give the opportunity to correct. I have no doubt they will fix it. Let me say this clearly; If anyone is curious about the layoff, I think they should look from left to right. That they are not interested in our administrative processes. “After all, we are not talking about a simple topic, but about an issue about our belief, with precision and caution,” he said.
“I HAVE A RELIGIOUS EDUCATION, I READ EZAN”
Responding to criticism about reading the Quran, İmamoğlu said: “There is also endless discomfort. ‘Wow sir, why did Ekrem İmamoğlu read the Quran?’ What discomfort it created. Very interesting. Thousands of comments were made on this, besides me. Yes; I have read the Holy Quran; I also read Why does it bother you? What do people want? Ekrem İmamoğlu read the Quran.
For each political income; Let me tell you, especially those who use it to collect votes face the greatest sin. I know myself. I don’t want to say that; but I also have a religious education. I am a person who has received religious education since the age of 6 and 7, and at the age of 10 I have read adhan repeatedly in the village mosques. So let them take care of their work. “They shouldn’t try to get political profit from these jobs,” he said.
“HEAD OF RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS, REPRESENTATIVE OF THE GOVERNMENT”
Speaking about the statements of the Directorate of Religious Affairs, İmamoğlu said: “Diyanet is a very valuable institution established in the period of our republic. It is necessary to distinguish between this institution and the person in charge. Unfortunately, he is a person who has become a representative of political power. Especially my election has shown it by becoming part of the political process and mechanism in the events that I have experienced.
Since yesterday I am amazed that once again I participate in this process with an interesting language. What is it, sir? “When it is read in another language, it cannot be the Koran.” We followed him with admiration for years, Cat Stevens, you know, he became a Muslim and adopted the name Yusuf Islam. Cat Stevens was not someone who knew Arabic as you had imagined. He preferred to be a Muslim studying English. So a very shallow mind and a very shallow recipe.

Another issue, that is, the Koran in Kurdish was said and introduced in the polling places, there is nothing more natural than printing the Koran in Kurdish.
