December 21, 1963 was one of the darkest days for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The Greek gang, known as the EOKA organization, was carrying out bloody attacks to eliminate the Turkish Cypriots from the island. The three sons of senior doctor Nihat İlhan, who was the director of the military hospital in Cyprus at the time, and his wife, shot in the bathtub, went down in history as the symbol of these attacks in which hundreds of innocent civilians were killed. On the anniversary of the event known as ‘Bloody Christmas’, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Gazi University, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Necmi İlhan returned to those days again:
“I am Prof. Dr. Mustafa Necmi İlhan, I am the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Gazi University. At the same time, I am the son of the eldest doctor Nihat İlhan, whose wife and 3 children were martyred by the Greeks in 1963. 57 years ago, on December 21, 1963, the Greeks rebelled and raided the Turkish neighborhoods of Nicosia, where they lived. together at that time. They come to the neighborhood, which is now Mürüvvet İlhan Sokak, which is very close to the United Nations Headquarters, which we call Ledra Palace. They proceed by scanning the Turkish citizens in the houses that come in front of them. My 3 deceased brothers who were hiding in the bathroom after entering our home; Murat, Kutsi, Hakan and their mother are martyred scanning Mürüvvet İlhan. At the same time, they are scanning our owner, his wife and daughter.

MY FATHER IS IN THE FRONT
My father was the chief physician of the Cyprus regiment in 1963. Surgeon general and orthopedist, military physician. He is there for the mission at that time. He is responsible for the military hospital in the region where the clashes are taking place. Here, too, he provides treatment to people injured in the fighting, both on the Turkish side and on the Greek side. The house is somewhere not even 500 meters away when you look at the Ledra Palace of the UN Headquarters from a bird’s eye view. Think that this area will not be a problem since it is safe and is in the center of the city.

‘I CAN’T DRINK MILK NO LONGER’
He finds out a few days after the incident. In fact, the question of how you know is very painful. There he sees a shepherd who brings milk to the children. He says ‘Don’t neglect our children’s milk, right’. Shepherd turns white. Then he says something like ‘They can’t drink milk anymore’. At that moment, they get into the military vehicle with the officers on duty. They come to the front of the house. The door of the house was scanned, its exterior burned. They say you will not enter the house, we will go to the embassy. They go together to the embassy. The ambassador at the time said: ‘Major, his wife and their 3 children were martyred.’ My father says “Thanks to Vatan”.
BELOVED ‘KUTSİ’
The Republic of Turkey is one of the justifications for the intervention of Cyprus. On December 21, 1963, on the night that went down in history as ‘Bloody Christmas’, not only our own but also many Turkish citizens were murdered there. From this point of view, it is seen that it is a planned action, officially aimed at the eradication of the Turkish race.
Claiming that his father came later to his hometown Elazığ with the funerals and buried his children and wife, İlhan said: “Child pain is like nothing. We all know this. The name of number two of our deceased was Kutsi. Kutsi was red-haired. My son is also Nihat Demirhan İlhan, he is also red-haired. “I remember after more than 40 years I still loved my son as ‘Kutsi’, even though he had grandchildren.”
