Known for his studies in the field of Economic History, historian Dr. Mehmet Genç passed away at the age of 87 at the Pendik Training and Research Hospital of the University of Marmara, where he was treated.
After being treated for lung cancer for a year and a half, Genç died at the Pendik Research and Training Hospital of the University of Marmara tonight.
Born in Artvin Arhavi in 1934, Genç graduated from Haydarpaşa High School in Istanbul in 1953 and from the Department of Finance and Economics of the Faculty of Political Science of Ankara University in 1958.
He entered the Turkish Institute of Economic History at the Faculty of Economics at Istanbul University in 1960 and worked with Ömer Lütfi Barkan as an assistant for “Economic History”.

He trained many students
In 1983, he began working as a professor at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of the University of Marmara, Department of History. He educated many students in the History Department of the University of Marmara until his retirement.
He taught undergraduate and graduate courses on Ottoman Economic History. After retiring in 1999, he taught undergraduate and graduate courses at the ITU Department of Social and Human Sciences, the History Department at Istanbul Bilgi University, the Sociology Department at the Istanbul University Faculty of Literature, and the Department of History, Faculty of Humanities, Istanbul Şehir University.
Many of Mehmet Genç’s articles on the Ottoman economy were translated into many languages including English, French, Arabic, and Greek and reprinted.
An important part of his works and articles were published as a book in 2000 by the Ötüken Publishing House under the name “State and economy in the Ottoman Empire” with some additions. The work, which they prepared for publication with Erol Özvar in 2006, with the Ottoman Budgets, was published under the name “Ottoman Budgets and Financial Institutions”.
