When Cemal Yalazı passed away in 2004, Mihriye Yalazı continued to live alone at home. Executives from the Onassis Foundation, which was established on behalf of the world-famous shipowner, came to view the house, accompanied by officials from the Greek Consulate in Izmir. He wanted to buy the house on behalf of the foundation. However, Mihriye Yalazı did not sell the house.

“I DID NOT SELL THE GREEK FLAG IN CASE OF WAVING”

Mihriye Yalazı, who told the story of her three-story house under protection with the traces of history, said:

* Those responsible for the foundation established in the name of Onassis wanted to see the house. They offered three million euros to buy the house. We were very surprised by this money. Cüneyt Kavuncu, who was the commander of the garrison at Akhisar at the time, came to our visit. Kavuncu, a patriotic Turkish soldier, Kemalist, nationalist, explained that selling this house was tantamount to selling the homeland, the Greek flag would fly here, and that the Turkish flag and the Greek flag at the Akhisar Military Service on the same street would harm everyone the Turks. With these words I understood that I cannot accept that the Greek flag is flying here. I decided not to sell this house, where we spent happy days with my wife, to the Onassis Foundation.
