Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia can defend Armenia under its obligations under the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), but these obligations do not cover the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh.

THE MOST VIOLENT EVENTS FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS

The main reason for the tension between Azerbaijan and Armenia is Nagorno-Karabakh. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, Karabakh became a zone of tension between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The growing tension has been going on for more than 20 years, when the Karabakh Armenians demanded that Karabakh move from Soviet Azerbaijan to Soviet Armenia.

The conflict, which began on September 27, dragged on for more than 10 days, prompting remarks as “the toughest conflict between the two countries since the 1990s.”

Despite the ceasefire between the parties, frequent clashes continue on the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which occupies the region. The tension in the region is closely followed by the international public due to the corridor of gas and oil pipelines in the region. (BBC Türkçe, Euronews)
