Firefighters intervene in the fire that broke out at the historic Vaniköy Mosque in Üsküdar. Coast Guard crews also took part in the burning of the historic Vaniköy Mosque from the sea. The fire is under control, but the historic mosque has been destroyed.

EXPLANATION OF GOVERNANCE

In the statement made by the Governor of Istanbul on the matter, the following was stated:

Today around 1:30 pm, a fire broke out in the historic Vaniköy Mosque in the Kandilli district of our Üsküdar district for an unidentified reason.
Firefighting teams were quickly dispatched to the scene from land and sea.
Fire cooling works continue, which were taken under control by intervening with (3) coastguard boat from the sea and IMM (5) vehicle and firefighting equipment from land.
An investigation was launched into the Vaniköy Mosque fire, whose wooden pieces were burned.

350 YEARS

The Vaniköy Mosque was built in 1670 by Vani Mehmet Efendi. During the reign of Sultan Mahmut I, the sultan’s court was added to the mosque, which had a single minaret and a single balcony, was rectangular in plan and the walls were masonry and flattened.
