On December 1, 2020, an election was held for deputy mayor, after the mayor of Menemen, Serdar Aksoy, was arrested and suspended as a result of a corruption operation.

A ballot box was established in the municipal council consisting of 15 members of the CHP, 10 members of the AKP, 3 members of the GOOD Party, 2 members of the MHP and 1 independent member, and a total of 31 members. Member of Nation’s Alliance CHP Att. Deniz Karakurt and the People’s Alliance nominated Aydın Pehlivan, a member of the AKP. In the first two rounds, the majority of 3 of 3, and the absolute majority could not be achieved as a result of the equality of 15-15 in the third round, the tie was made. As a result of the draw, the deputy mayor of the municipality of Menemen was Deniz Karakurt from CHP.

THE COURT STOPPED THE EXECUTION

However, members of the AKP went to the Izmir Second Administrative Court and asked for the elections to be canceled. AKP candidate Aydın Pehlivan filed a lawsuit demanding the suspension of the lottery section’s execution, citing the violation of the requirement that voting must take place in a closed and secret bag, not in an open and transparent box.

The court determined that Pehlivan’s request was justified and ordered a stay of execution. If the court makes a final decision of nullity, the part of the election for the deputy mayor of Menemen will be renewed. CHP İzmir Provincial Directorate announced that they will appeal the decision.

, RECOMMENDED THIS METHOD

CHP Izmir Provincial President Deniz Yücel announced that they would appeal the decision. Defending that the lottery was done in accordance with the law, Yücel said: “They had no objection regarding the method of drawing on Election Day. There is no record, record of objections or petition on this matter. They even suggested this method. “The court’s decision is contrary to article 45 of the Municipal Law.”

While AKP İzmir Provincial Chairman Kerem Ali Continuous said “good luck” on the court decision, MHP İzmir Provincial Chairman Veysel Şahin said that “the finger cut off by justice does not hurt”. Wanting to renew the elections completely, Şahin said he believed that the Presidential Alliance candidate would win if the elections were to be held again.
