Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries of the UA and Department of Fishing and Fishing Processing Department of Fishing Technology Professor Prof. Dr. Mehmet Cengiz Deval made evaluations on the statement on the support to the fishing of puffer fish and said that there is no permit for puffer fish fishing for amateur anglers. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Cengiz Deval, The objective of the Balloon Fishing Support Communiqué, published by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in November, is to promote blowfish fishing by reducing the density and participation rate of the blowfish ‘Lagocephalus sceleratus ‘, which is one of the puffer fish that damages aquatic biodiversity in the seas and the fishing gear of fishermen. “Considering that sea surface temperatures have increased in the last 30 years, it is seen that the conditions of the Eastern Mediterranean have become more and more suitable for the growth, reproduction and survival of tropical species and these conditions provide diverse advantages to alien species in competition with native ones, “said Prof. Dr. Mehmet Cengiz Deval. He stated that in the last 40 years, the number of puffer fish recorded in Mediterranean waters increased to 11 and 8 puffer species belonging to the Tetraodontidae family were detected in the Turkish seas.

In saying that the puffer fish is considered the second most poisonous vertebrate animal in the world after the golden poison frog, Prof. Dr. “The gonads, the liver, the intestines, the muscle tissues and sometimes the skin of the fish puffer fish contain neurotoxin, which is called tetrodotoxin (TTX). Tetrodotoxin, 1200 times more toxic than cyanide, is also deadly to humans. “One puffer fish has enough toxins to kill 30 adult humans and there is no known antidote.” , said.
Stating that the symptoms of tetrodotoxin poisoning typically occur between 10 and 45 minutes after ingesting the puffer fish venom, Prof. Dr. Deval said: “The poisoning begins with numbness and tingling in the mouth, saliva, nausea and vomiting. . “Symptoms can progress to paralysis, loss of consciousness and respiratory failure and cause death,” he said.
Dean Prof. Dr. Deval said: “The maximum length of puffer fish in our waters varies between 16 and 114 centimeters, while four of the species do not contain TTX, while the other four contain TTX and are fatal to humans.”
