Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte considered “unacceptable” the filing of a criminal complaint by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan against Geert Wilders, leader of the far-right Freedom Party (PVV), for insulting him.
Dutch Foreign Minister Stefan Block also relayed the response of the Turkish ambassador in The Hague calling the Saban Gear countries.
Prime Minister Rutte said he wanted to send a message to President Erdogan after journalists reminded him of the criminal complaint against Wilders in parliament.
The Prime Minister of the Netherlands told President Erdogan: “My message is very simple; in the Netherlands, we consider freedom of thought as the most important value, and this includes caricatures of politicians.”
Dutch Foreign Minister Stef Blok called Erdogan’s statements to the leader of the main opposition party, Wilders, “completely inappropriate.”
Block, instead of calling the ministry due to coronavirus restrictions, Turkey’s ambassador to The Hague by phone calling Saban Gear, said his uncomfortable message from Erdogan’s remarks. The Dutch chancellor explained that he conveyed the message to Erdogan that “it is unacceptable to try to restrict the freedom of expression of a Dutch parliamentarian.”
The Dutch minister said Erdogan’s remarks hit diplomatic relations “with a sledgehammer.”
Blok reacted to the beheading of teacher Samuel Paty by a radical-minded person for showing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in France. He described the cartoons as “part of the free society.
The Dutch minister also said that individual actions should not be associated with all Muslims, as the leader of the PVV, Wilders, did.
Far-right leader Geert Wilders responded to President Erdogan’s criminal complaint on Twitter.
“So the man who called me a fascist, who previously described the whole of Holland as a Nazi and fascist relic, is suing me? The world has been turned upside down. Loser,” Wilders said.
The far-right leader, in his speech in parliament, asked the Turkish ambassador in The Hague to deport him immediately.
The government partner, the Christian Union Party (CU), suggested that the Dutch ambassador in Ankara be summoned to The Hague for consultation. He blocks the chancellor, stressing that it is not prudent to cut diplomatic relations, “we cut our ties with Turkey and we cannot transmit messages,” he said.
PVV leader Wilders shared a cartoon depicting Erdogan with a grenade to his head on his Twitter account and included the phrase “terrorist.” Addressing Wilders as a “fascist”, Erdogan filed a criminal complaint against him through his lawyer, claiming that the far-right leader had exceeded the limits of freedom of thought.
