The 6.6 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Izmir Seferihisar district on October 30 killed 114 people, injured hundreds and damaged many buildings.
On the one hand, while trying to heal the wounds from the earthquake, on the other hand, new images of that dark day continue to emerge. The huge concrete blocks of the inactive viaduct in İzmir Alsancak could not withstand the severity of the earthquake. The concrete blocks, which weighed tons, collapsed in seconds and fell on the vehicles in the parking lot from a height of meters. At that time, some citizens and officials in the parking lot noticed the impact of the earthquake and the falling blocks and escaped. Fortunately, although no one was injured in the incident, the cars the blocks fell into were rendered unusable. The terrifying moments were reflected in the security camera of a nearby workplace for a few seconds.

Sedat Tümentunç, who has a workplace in an area close to the incident, said they felt the ground shaking more violently as the blocks fell. Tümentunç said: “We work in the business center here. I also have a tea house business here. My wife was inside. I was also outside. When my wife started yelling ‘an earthquake is happening’ from inside, I pulled my husband out. I saw the columns rising from the ground and the concrete blocks falling, the containers falling from the port. We jumped here and then there was the second big impact. Fortunately, no one was here, but many vehicles were damaged. “We are also fortunate to have lost the force of our work.”
