The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will meet on December 10 to approve Pfizer’s vaccine. If the vaccine is approved for emergency use, it will begin shipping in the US immediately. The first U.S. citizen is expected to be vaccinated on December 11 or 12.
The statement came from Moncef Slaoui, director of the COVID-19 vaccination program. Speaking to CNN television, the official said: “Our plan is to deliver the vaccine to immune centers within 24 hours of approval.”
The vaccine from US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and its German partner Biontech applied for emergency use approval from the US Food and Drug Administration on Friday.
Independent FDA consultants will meet on December 10 to discuss whether to approve the vaccine. If the vaccine is approved, distribution in the US will begin immediately.
Slaoui stated that the vaccine will be distributed to states in proportion to their population, and states will decide who will get vaccinated first.
The federal administration recommends prioritizing healthcare workers, frontline workers, and seniors at risk.
70 percent of the population needs to be vaccinated to guarantee the immunity of the community. The US official said they aim to reach this rate in May.
The United States has a population of 330 million. The number of coronavirus cases in the country has exceeded 12 million. The number of cases increased by more than a million in less than a week.
Pfizer and BioNTech had announced that the vaccine was 95 percent effective. The vaccine should be given in two doses, three weeks apart.
Approximately 25 million vaccines are expected to be available in the United States in December.
