People took to the streets after allegations of sabotage in the forest fire that started in the Belen district of Hatay and spread to İskenderun and Arsuz districts and damaged settlements. Citizens kept watch in the tense night.
The forest fire that started in the countryside of the Belén district at 10.15 am on Friday, October 9, spread in a short time due to wind speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour. The fire, which spread to the Iskenderun and Arsuz districts, damaged many houses, workplaces and factories in the settlements.
The emergence of the possibility of sabotage by the fire, which was completely controlled in about 33 hours, brought some subsequent claims. Social media accounts close to the terrorist organization claimed that the forest fires were caused by the ‘Children of Fire Initiative’.
At night, young people in the İsmetpaşa district of İskederun claimed that a person was trying to burn down the forest in the forest area and when they found out, they fled unsuccessfully and took to the streets. Young men on guard in the forest near the Iskenderun-Belén highway alerted the police.
The police and the young man searched the forest for the suspect together. No criminal or suspicious item was found.
