In the verbal vote held in the Senate General Assembly, Burns reached a sufficient majority and became the first director of diplomatic origin in the history of the CIA.
Burns, who previously served as the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, received significant support from both Democrats and Republicans.
Burns had stated in the previous session of the Senate that the most important global competitor of the United States is China and that they will take important steps in this direction.
Burns, who served as the U.S. ambassador to Amman from 1998-2000 and Moscow from 2005-2008, served as deputy foreign minister from 2011-2014 and retired on that date.
Burns, who has been the president of the Carnegie International Peace Foundation since 2014, is expected to serve as a person in line with the Biden administration’s “diplomacy first” foreign policy approach.
