In flight miles, airlines are extending the validity dates of the miles claiming that there are travel bans due to the new type of coronavirus epidemic (Kovid-19) this year. Many companies like clothing, markets, airlines, fuel oil earn points for their customers. While some of the money points earned by customers are reset at the end of the year, some of them lose their validity. Some of the consumers may become victims because they do not know that their points will be eliminated at the end of the year. The consumer associations, for their part, want the points that are eliminated at the end of the year to be remembered to the consumer at least two months before December 31 and that they are used within the scope of the needs by distributing the points in time. Companies provide information through text messages or email so as not to victimize their consumers and encourage them to buy.
‘It must be spread’
The president of the Federation of Consumer Associations (TÜDEF), Aziz Koçal, stated that consumers should check the points accumulated on the cards issued by companies and banks, and the duration of the flight miles. When mentioning that most points have a certain period of use, Koçal said: “If there is a period of use of points and miles accumulated on the cards, companies and banks must inform their customers about the amount and places that can be used before the end of this period two months in advance in the persistent data environment. Thus, consumers can use their money points over time and use them according to their needs ”. “Points on cards issued by banks and companies are the right earned by the consumer. It should not be limited to time ”, said Koçal and emphasized that the consumer must have the opportunity to use it when they want and need it.
Regulation is essential
Stating that companies and banks have different practices regarding the use of points on loyalty cards, Koçal said: “Most of the time, consumers are victims of these practices. For this reason, the consumer must be protected through the implementation of legal regulations on the matter. The consumer must make use of their acquired rights so as not to be a victim, so they must act by reviewing the points accumulated on the cards they have and knowing if it is transferred to the following year ”.

This year, travel restrictions were imposed for a time due to the epidemic. In this context, Turkish Airlines and Pegasus Airlines have postponed the expiration date of the points, which will expire on December 31, 2020, to June 30, 2021.
From 30 days to 6 months
Chain markets also add points to their loyalty cards in exchange for the purchases they make to their customers. But each market has a different application. For this reason, consumers need to call the call centers of the markets where they buy and obtain information. Supermarket chains give customers a point for their purchases, mainly from the campaigns that are carried out in the market. Although the period of use of these points in some markets is 30 days, in some markets it is up to 6 months. Information such as the period of validity of the points, the amount and the special advantages obtained by that purchase is included in the receipts acquired after the purchase in the markets.
The date limit is variable
Points are accumulated on debit and credit cards based on consumer spending. Each bank has different practices regarding the date limitation on which points must be used. Consumers may obtain information about the expiration dates of their points from the mobile application of banks or from call centers. This information is also included on the card statements.
Pay attention to the density!
Aydın Ağaoğlu, Honorary President of the Consumer Application Center, stated that consumers can use the points for their needs without waiting for the last day of the year. Emphasizing that attention should be paid to rush hour, Ağaoğlu said: “Consumers should refrain from entering the crowd by rushing to wear points during the epidemic period. “Off-peak days and hours should be preferred for ATMs in markets and stores.”
