The fish kills occurred in the part where Tuzla Stream empties into the sea in the Ayvacık district of Çanakkale. While dozens of dead fish such as perch, red mullet and carp were stranded where the stream meets the sea, the District Agriculture and Forestry Directorate launched an investigation.
Citizens, who saw a large number of dead fish on the beach where the stream in the village of Tuzla meets the surface and the sea, reported the situation to the authorities. Although it is believed that the death of the fish may have been caused by the decrease in the water level in the stream due to drought and lack of oxygen, the cause of the death of the fish will be determined after investigation of the teams from the District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry.
‘WE BELIEVE IT IS CAUSED BY OXYGEN DEFICIENCY’
Stating that the drought can kill fish in the Tuzla creek, the head of the Tuzla village, Necdi Ceylan, said: “We have dead fish in the creek. We caught him going on the spot. About 150-200 fish die.
It happened to us last year. Fish like sea bass, mullet, and carp are dead. There was also a drought this year. These fish started dying before the rains started. We believe it is due to a lack of oxygen. Officials of the District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry will take samples and then the cause of death of the fish will be determined ”.
The Tuzla stream, where fish kills occurred, runs through the village and into the sea.
