German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with French President Emmanuel Macron and Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz on the border issue in the context of the new type of coronavirus outbreak (Covid-19).
Prime Minister Merkel stated that it is important to take into account the rate of transmission of the coronavirus in neighboring countries and comply with the necessary rules to return to the Schengen rules.
Merkel stated that the borders will be gradually opened by the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs. Testing is said to start in the country next week and there will be no border control after June 15.
The EU Commission also made a statement regarding the reopening of the borders, saying: “Open carefully. The opening must be gradual.”
The draft text on the opening of borders at the EU Commission meeting on Wednesday included the implementation of the anti-virus measures and regulations introduced among the countries with a high number of infections, and then the final objective was to restore freedom of movement in the Schengen area.
Austrian Prime Minister Sebastian Kurz has worked hard to open borders with Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg and Tourism Minister Elisabeth Köstinger to reopen borders in the EU as he fears tourism will suffer heavy losses in the last weeks.
