Rolf Mützenich, chairman of the Assembly Group of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), argued that the United States (USA) should fire nuclear weapons stationed in Germany. This statement by Mützenich to Tagesspiegel also generated controversy among the parties of the German coalition.
“It is time for Germany to block possible deployments,” said Mützenich Tagesspiegel in its current issue. The Social Democratic legislator pointed out that other countries have followed a similar path “without discussing NATO.”
The president of the SPD Assembly Group justified his request with the search by US President Donald Trump for a new nuclear strategy. Mützenich said that Trump sees nuclear weapons not only as a deterrent, but rather as weapons to be used in combat.
Rolf Mützenich argued that Germany should also end its nuclear commitment under NATO. Under NATO agreements, Germany had promised to transport American nuclear bombs with its own planes in case of war. The Ministry of Defense is preparing to add new combat aircraft with this capability to the army.

According to the Turkish DW report, the statements of the Social Democratic politician came from Johann Wadephul, Vice-President of the Parliamentary Group of Parties of the Christian Union (CDU / CSU). Wadephul argued that SPD Foreign Minister Heiko Maas should adopt a different attitude.
“Maintaining Germany’s nuclear involvement is indisputable for the CDU / CSU Assembly Group,” Wadephal said, “This issue has been justified in a coalition contract. It cannot be negotiated.” Wadephul declared that nuclear deterrence is essential for the security of Europe.
At the German Air Force base in Büchel, there are 45 Tornado-type fighter jets capable of carrying American nuclear bombs. Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer wants to renew old tornadoes with 45 F-18s produced by the American company Boeing and 93 Eurofighter Airbus. Mützenich also stated that he was against the purchase of the F-18s.
Between the Social Democratic Party, the Greens and the Left Party, he was previously asked to withdraw the American nuclear weapons stationed in Germany.
