A vehicle in Trier, Germany, was among the pedestrians: 1 baby, 5 people died

In the western German city of Trier, a car entered the pedestrians. Police reported that five people died in the incident, including a nine-week-old baby.

Trier Mayor Wolfram Leibe reported 14 injuries, some seriously.

Police announced the arrest of a 51-year-old suspect who lives in Trier. In the statement made, it was indicated that the suspect resisted the police before being captured, but did not give any information.

It was also noted that the suspect, who had psychiatric problems, was excessively alcoholic at the time of the incident.

Although the police first warned the public to stay away from the city center after the incident, the second statement stated that there were no ongoing threats.

Trierischer Volksfreund, one of the local newspapers, wrote that a dark gray vehicle had crashed into pedestrians in a report based on the statements of an eyewitness.

The newspaper also reported that the region was taken to the security cordon by helicopter.

Germany has increased safety in pedestrian zones across the country since the 2016 truck attack on a Christmas market in the capital Berlin, which killed 12 people.
