An unidentified man in the city of Budaun in India’s Uttar Pradesh state cut the belly of his pregnant wife with a sickle to find out the sex of her children. While the woman was seriously injured, the baby died. In a statement made by the police, it was reported that the incident occurred on September 19 and it was announced that the woman was in intensive care in the capital, New Delhi. Police reported that the man was detained.

The woman’s brother, Golu Singh, said in a statement about the incident that his sister had 5 daughters and that her brother-in-law did this to find out the sex of the baby. “My sister attacked with a sickle and tore her belly, saying that she wanted to control the sex of the fetus,” Singh said.

In India, families whose girls have to pay a dowry when they marry generally view their daughters as a burden. For this reason, boys are preferred over girls. Under Indian law, doctors and health professionals are prohibited from sharing the sex of an unborn child with its parents, performing tests to determine the sex of the child, or causing girls to withdraw through an abortion.
