Scientific studies by Van Yüzüncü Yıl University (YYÜ), Bandırma Onyedi Eylül University and Hacattepe University to determine the new species of fish found in the lake have been completed.
In the studies carried out, it was determined that the yellow fish with black spots and 5-6 centimeters long, which is the first to be found except for the pearl mullet, which lives in Lake Van, is a small coral.
Mehmet Emin Bilmez, Governor of Van and Deputy Mayor of the Metropolitan Municipality, told the Edremit Boat Command press conference that they found a sister fish to the pearl mullet that lives in Lake Van.

Stating that the thesis that until now only pearl mullets lived in Lake Van is now disproven, Bilmez said:
“Our gendarmerie teams who dived in previous years found that there was another species of fish in the freshwater habitat around the microbialites. So our Van YYÜ University professors, Hacettepe and Bandırma Onyedi Eylül started a study. As a result of the study, this fish was recorded and entered world literature. People will want to dive in Lake Van to see this fish. I hope we make this fish one of Van’s symbols. “
YYÜ Faculty of Fisheries Dr. Mustafa Akkuş explained that it is a miracle that fish live in a narrow area.

Stating that they were very excited to witness the existence of a new fish in Lake Van, Akkuş continued as follows:
“We have carried out detailed studies in fish for about three years. We published this study in one of the most prestigious scientific journals in the world two weeks ago. Thus, it has been scientifically proven that there is a new species in Lake Van other than the pearl mullet. Because it was known that there was always only one type of fish in Lake Van. Now there is another fish that is the brother of the pearl mullet. We call it Van Lake Little Coral Fish. “

Recalling that there are the world’s largest microbialites in the depths of Lake Van, Akkuş said:
“So far, we have determined that he lives in two different locations on Lake Van. It measures about 5 centimeters. But it has had a great impact on the scientific world. Unlike the pearl mullet, the life cycle continues only in Lake Van. This is like a miracle for a fish. This species of fish encountered humans centuries later. It was discovered for the first time. This shows that there is still a mystery to be discovered in the turquoise waters of Lake Van. We are going to map the areas where the fish live. “
At the program attended by the Commander of the Provincial Gendarmerie, Brigadier General Yüksel Fidan, Governor Bilmez presented plaques to Akkuş staff and the gendarmerie underwater team.
