Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu made a statement on his social media account about the cancellation of the Istanbul Convention. Soylu said the following:
“We, as security forces, take our power from the constitution, the laws and the principle of protecting the innocence of our people against all kinds of crimes, in guaranteeing peace, order and security in our country, in the fight against terrorism, robbery, organized crime, computer crime, drugs and violence, all kinds of crimes.
The existence or absence of international conventions does not reduce or increase our responsibilities to prevent any form of crime that our citizens and our work will face as a requirement of this responsibility.
It should also be taken into account that leaving the party is a right of every sovereign state, in addition to being a party to international treaties and conventions.
Combating violence against women and in the family is not the existence of the Istanbul Convention that makes us responsible to our society for preventing femicide.
