Turkey and Greece, according to their contract in 1923, the Lausanne Peace Treaty, in addition to their own countries, kept their citizens from emigrating on the basis of religion. As a result of this migration, Parliament, the ‘Property Acquisition Law’ has prevented property owners from removing a result of migration from Greece to Turkey. In this context, the building, which was used as a church in the Tirilye district, was handed over to a Turkish family called ‘Ali Durak de Girit’ who came from Greece in 1928. After 90 years, the Cretan family sold the building to a businessman from Istanbul. Entrepreneurs who wanted to build an ‘Apart Hotel’ got stuck with the bureaucratic hurdle. The building, which is considered a garden house in the zoning plans of the Mudanya municipality, did not allow the construction of a boutique hotel because the Directorate of the Regional Board of Preservation of the Cultural Heritage of Bursa was previously used as a church. Entrepreneurs who do not want to be disclosed also put the building up for sale for $ 1 million in 2015. The building, of which only stone walls remain today, could not find a buyer despite the last 6 years.

Tour guide Kadri Uyanık said: “Tirilye is a Christian Greek settlement during the Ottoman period. ‘Tirilye’ means three in Greek. Three clergymen who opposed the meeting of the Iznik Council during Roman times settled here. Here the Orthodox Christian community took shape, where 3 excommunicated clergymen met. Later in the 1400s, in the Ottoman period, this church was built in the name of Saint John. Over time, many buildings were added, including a monastery for nuns and priests. The fate of the building, where Christians worshiped for almost 500 years, changed in 1923. After the Treaty of Lausanne, the population exchange between Greece and Turkey took place. This agreement based on Greek Christians living in Turkey sent Muslims who are there as emigrants to Turkey to Greece. With the agreement, the church also ceased to be a center of worship. The Cretan Muslim family who arrived during the population exchange was assigned as residence. Over time, the additional buildings and land, especially the monastery, were used for different purposes, ”he said.

Noting that the historic building fell into ruins, Uyanık said: “We are very saddened by this situation. There are those who are interested. Meetings continue with the heads of the association who are in Istanbul and represent the Greeks. They want to buy this place and build it. I hope it is evaluated as soon as possible. After the 2000s, tourism has changed. These types of historical places began to be in demand. “I believe that the restoration of this place as a church will contribute to urban tourism.”
