In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, one of the African countries, the United Nations (UN) convoy was attacked around 10.15 a.m. local time this morning.
It was announced that two people had died prior to the attack in Kanyamahoro City. Later, the Italian Foreign Ministry announced that the country’s ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the police at his side were killed.
La Repubblica newspaper wrote that the ambassador died in a hospital in Goma, on the shores of Lake Kivu, where they crossed the borders of three countries, from where he was brought wounded.
The Reuters news agency reports that the attackers tried to take some of the people in the convoy hostage.
There are many armed groups in the vicinity of Virunga National Park. Visitors to the national parks are frequently attacked in the area between the Democratic Congo and the borders of Rwanda and Uganda.
The Italian media headline the death of Ambassador Luca Attanasio. The daily Il Messaggero wrote that Attanasio was the youngest diplomat in the world.
