Turkey, while fighting the Kovid-19 epidemic, also the Ergene Basin is undergoing a development that would threaten public health. Public health experts warn that poisons in the Ergene River, which overflowed after effective rain in Thrace, spilled onto the ground and groundwater.
The Ergene River has almost become a sewer due to destruction caused by industrial waste over many years. In Ergene, which has become highly polluted fourth class water, the flooding experienced after heavy rains in the region caused the basin’s agricultural lands to fill with chemical waste.
THE ALARM IS ‘RED’
The agricultural lands of the Babaeski, Pehlivanköy and Uzunköprü line were submerged under the toxic waters of Ergene. State Hydraulic Works raised the alarm situation on the Ergene River from “orange” to “red”, while the latter situation worried experts.
Trakya University School of Medicine, former Head of the Public Health Department, Urology and Pathology specialist Prof. Dr. Noting that poison was spilled on the ground after the flood, Osman İnci said:
“Floods carry serious health risks. Agricultural areas were flooded. We do not know what will happen to the chemical waste from the flood. Toxicity measurements should be made immediately on farmland in the flood zone. There is also contamination of groundwater. It is not known how much water the toxic substances were carried into groundwater. Putting crops that will come out of Ergene’s water-covered lands up for sale without investigating the damage to public health creates risks. “
Professor at Trakya University School of Medicine, Department of Public Health. Dr. Faruk Yorulmaz said: “Whatever is in the water has polluted the soil and agricultural land. Any toxic substance will affect the cultivated crops. A solution must be found without harming the villagers ”.
‘MEASUREMENT MUST BE PERFORMED’
Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University Department of Land and Water Resources Biosystems Engineering Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Halim Orta said: “At the moment we do not know the toxic effect of contaminated water on agricultural land. The worst thing is that the polluted water from the fields that returns to the lake has passed to the roots of the plants and has gone deep into the soil. Toxicity measurements need to be done on groundwater resources and farmland, ”he said.
‘THERE IS CYANIDE AND CADMIUM’
The spokesperson for the Thracian platform, lawyer Bülent Kaçar, drew attention to the fact that there are around 2,100 industrial facilities in the region stretching from Çerkezköy to Uzunköprü. Kaçar, “Other heavy metals constantly detected in the river; Hazardous substances such as lead, chromium, iron, zinc, arsenic, sulfate, copper. “The wheat fields are covered with Ergene water, which has become home to these toxic substances.”
