Gökhan KARAKAŞ / İSTANBUL
Following the bloody attack that drew the attention of international maritime authorities on the Gulf of Guinea, the maritime bandits, who kidnapped 15 Turks to demand a ransom from the ship’s captain, contacted the company on the fifth day. The contact established 5 days after the incident, which was enthusiastically followed by the Turkish public, was interpreted as the general behavior of the sea bandits.
It emerged that they called the company’s Germany-Hamburg office for the crew of the M / V Mozart, which is operated by the UK-based international Borealis Denizcilik, and gave the names of the entire crew and presented evidence of they were all fine.
15 of the 19 crew members were kidnapped and an Azerbaijani national died on the ship, which was moving from Lagos, Nigeria to Cape Town, South Africa.
EXPLANATIONS OF THE GENERAL DIRECTOR OF BODEN MARITIME
Levent Karsan, General Manager of BODEN Shipping, made a statement on the health status of Turkish seafarers on CNN TÜRK’s live broadcast. Karsan said in his statement;
(Health status of employees)
I wish that we all recover soon. We get confirmation of the health of all personnel by interviewing the ship’s captain directly and then interviewing the personnel one by one.
I personally did not meet. But our responsible friends met 15 people one by one. And all are in good health. I personally heard these interviews.
(What was the request of the pirates?)
In the first place, families were the first to report. Because this is your right. They did not demand anything of us. Because we are the Istanbul office. We are the technical affairs office. The shipowner is abroad. It is a ship with a foreign flag. We direct the pirates towards the shipowner. The crisis team prepared by the shipowner will now negotiate with them.
We gave a phone number to the appropriate crisis center. They called. They also once again interviewed individual staff and received their confirmation. Thank goodness to all of them in good health.
Other than that, no information regarding the interviews has been provided to us and will not be provided to us. This is a very sensitive issue. Therefore, the crisis table clearly stated that this information will not be given to anyone, including me.
(How will the next process progress?)
As a company, a team of experts leads the negotiations for the fastest solution. In this regard, you have experienced, if necessary, that they have not previously encountered on these issues for a long time, the only issue on which we focus is the possibility that the material and moral well-being of the staff is safely brought to Turkey. We have been informed that financial means related to this will be provided by the company in any way.
