US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has asked Russia for the immediate release of Russian opposition Alexey Navalny, detained in Moscow upon his return from Germany.
Pompeo reacted to the Moscow administration by making a written statement about the arrest of Russian dissident Navalniy.
“The United States strongly condemns the Russian arrest of Alexei Navalny. We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Navalniy,” it said in a statement. Using his statement, Pompeo stated that space must be made available to all political parties and candidates in Russia during the electoral process.
Navalnıy, who took the plane from Tomsk, Russia to Moscow on August 20, 2020, became ill during the flight and the plane landed in Omsk. Navalniy, who was hospitalized in Omsk, was alleged to have been poisoned by a substance mixed with his tea.
Navalnıy, 44, was transferred from Omsk by private plane to the Charite Hospital in Berlin on August 22, 2020. Alexey Navalny was detained at the Moscow airport as soon as he returned from Germany, where he was receiving treatment.
